TAMPA, Fla. — It’s hard to imagine a time when women weren’t just as big of a part of Gasparilla, but the Krewe of Alegría says you only have to go back a little more than 30 years. 

“My girlfriend, Diane Henry and I started this back in 1986. We crashed the parade, and therefore we decided at that time we were going to go ahead and do the parade from then on,” said founder Rocky Valdez.  Read more

The Krewe of Alegria is known for being generous with their beads at Gasparilla, but this month, they’ll be generous with shoes. The local krewe made up of all women is raising funds to purchase new shoes for disadvantaged local youth. Members of the Krewe visited GDL in their well-known costumes to give details. You can help by attending Alegria’s Kickin’ for Kids this Saturday, Nov. 9, starting at 6:30 p.m. at Zydeco Brew Werks in Ybor City.
